In 2018 Ca’ Foscari University of Venice started the organization of what they’ve called Aperitivi in Lingua - Language happy hours - a series of events in which students meet each other and speak in a foreign language. The University came up with this idea when the need for internationalization took shape in a concrete opportunity to be more welcoming and offer new chances to socialize to its own students’ community - both Italian and international.
In just one year the available languages for the happy hours have doubled, adding to the 2018’s Chinese, Russian and Spanish meetings, this semester’s Japanese, Serbo-Croatian, Turkish and Vietnamese ones. The activity has been a success so far, giving each time the opportunity to 40 students to practice the language they choose and live a real multicultural experience.
We asked some students to comment on their experience in order to show you what three international cafoscarini think about these events:
“The Aperitivo in Lingua provided an opportunity to meet a lot of interesting people, and I am still friends with some them” (Ilya, Russian Happy Hour)
“The Aperitivo made us feel welcomed by the university and gave us a chance to take a break from classes and exams. There was an amazing cultural exchange between Turkish and Italian students!” (Muge, Turkish Happy Hour)
“We’ve done several activities to understand each other’s language and practice how to introduce ourselves in Chinese and Italian” (Shengen, Chinese Happy Hour)
Thanks to this activity, the University hopes to implement cultural exchange opportunities among its community and improve the Venetian experience of young students.
