Study in Venice

From June 22nd to July 3rd, 2026, Venice hosted the fourth edition of the summer school organized by the Study in Venice network: Arts in Venice Summer School “Preserving for the Future”. As in previous years, the ten international participants came from various countries, each bringing their own background and interests and actively contributing to the final workshop led by artist Nemanja Cvijanović, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice: this year students have come to Venice from Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Hungary.
The central theme of the fourth edition was the concept of protecting the city and its cultural, monumental, and artistic heritage: Venice and the lagoon serve as a prime example through which to observe, analyze, and counteract the effects of climate change, rising sea levels, pollution, and overtourism—all factors that afflict many other coastal cities throughout the Mediterranean and around the world.
According to Maddalena Bassani—associate professor of Classical Archaeology at the Università Iuav di Venezia and current summer school’s scientific director—this is “an important opportunity to introduce Venice and the lagoon from a perspective that breaks away from traditional stereotypes. Thanks to a well-established collaborative effort among the four Venetian institutions, the 2026 edition has provided an opportunity to reflect on crucial aspects for the city by combining theoretical lectures with visits and hands-on activities, without sacrificing moments of leisure and socializing.”
