The Architecture workshops W.A.VE. are back! Thanks to the organization of Università Iuav, the events will take place in Venice from June 17th to July 5th.
Every summer for three weeks in June and July, Università Iuav di Venezia turns into a big open campus, or a festival, thanks to the W.A.Ve. Workshops with the participation of over 100 teachers, professors and assistants, and 1.800 students enrolled in undergraduate courses.
With Wave 2019, the relationship between architecture and place becomes once more the focus of our attention, this time combined with the theme of environmental sustainability, an issue that all of us – as citizens, teachers and architects – must address. The premise of W.A.VE. 2019, which may seem provocative, is that Venice – with all its problems – has inherent traits of sustainability and that a coordinated planning practice can bring them to the fore. Today, any function that architecture is called upon to fulfil can be approached in two ways: with indifference towards the environment or with the stamp of ‘added value’ – that of preserving or improving the social and environmental conditions of the places it is practised.
We ask the architects and planners participating in W.A.VE. 2019 to take the second approach. Taking a series of strategic areas as the subject for design – with indications of potential use provided by the Municipality of Venice – projects will be developed that are compatible with the theme of sustainability and respect for the environment.
The objective is to show how projects of this kind – coordinated and applied to a special area such as Venice and its surroundings – can constitute, individually and as a whole, an example of virtuous design that addresses the needs of a specific city while assuming the wider responsibilities towards an environment at risk. The aim is to contribute to ensuring that Venice continues to be a ‘role model’ for other cities in the world.
